Joseph Jackson – Father of Legend; Michael Jackson

Remembering Joseph Walter Jackson: The Visionary Behind the Jackson Legacy

Joseph Walter Jackson, a name forever etched in the annals of entertainment history, was not only the patriarch of the iconic Jackson family but also an esteemed American talent manager. Born on July 26, 1928, in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, to Crystal Lee and Samuel Joseph Jackson, his journey began in a small town with big dreams. Little did the world know that this man would shape the destinies of some of the greatest entertainers the world had ever seen.

From a young age, Joseph’s life was marked by perseverance and determination. His father, a teacher, instilled in him the value of hard work and discipline. But his childhood was not without its challenges, as he described himself as a “lonely child that had only few friends.” However, fate had other plans for him when his parents separated, leading him to move to Oakland, California, with his father while the rest of his family settled in Indiana.

Life took a significant turn for Joseph when he met 17-year-old Katherine Scruse, and their love story began. Despite facing early obstacles, they married on November 5, 1949, and settled in Gary, Indiana. Together, they embarked on a journey that would see them raise ten children, creating a musical legacy that resonates to this day.

In the early 1960s, Joseph’s innate passion for music and his desire to see his children succeed in the entertainment industry became evident. He pushed his sons into a musical direction, and thus, The Jackson Brothers was born. The group went through a transformation with the inclusion of Marlon and Michael, and The Jackson 5 was officially born. Their rise to fame was nothing short of meteoric, with hit after hit topping the charts. Songs like “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” and “I’ll Be There” cemented their status as music legends.

Joseph’s dedication to his children’s success knew no bounds. He founded his own record label, Ivory Tower International Records, and toured internationally with The Jackson 5 as opening acts, further propelling their popularity. His youngest son, Randy, also received support, releasing his solo single under Joseph’s record label.

While Joseph’s management skills were instrumental in shaping the careers of his children, his image as a father faced scrutiny in the late 1980s. Allegations of abuse and his strict disciplinarian approach came to light through media reports. However, his children offered varying accounts, with some acknowledging his tough love as a driving force behind their success. Despite the controversies, Joseph’s influence on his children’s lives remained profound, as they continued to honor and respect him.

In the twilight of his life, Joseph Jackson received recognition for his contributions to the world of music and humanitarian efforts. In 2011, he was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, celebrating his roots and the impact he made. In 2014, he accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of his late son Michael, who was posthumously inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame.

Joseph’s health took a toll in his later years, but his love for music and his family remained unwavering. He passed away on June 27, 2018, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family. His final resting place was Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California, where he reunited with his beloved son Michael.

Joseph Walter Jackson’s legacy lives on through the music that continues to captivate generations. His vision and dedication to nurturing raw talent have left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment. As we remember him, we honor not just a man but a visionary whose dreams turned into reality, and whose love for music and family built a dynasty that will echo through time.
